Hellos and goodbyes. Change, a part of life—difficult, challenging, and invigorating.
When coworkers retire or leave for other library jobs, they take pieces of us with them and leave pieces of themselves behind. They have become a part of our family, our world, our journey. We cried and commiserated over life’s injustices, and hugged, smiled, and rejoiced over each others successes. We celebrate their impending adventure and mourn their loss in our world. We know that the library will never be the same without them. It won’t and we won’t. But for all of us there is growth and new opportunities.
The door opens wide and new people hop aboard, eager and enthusiastic to join in our crusade. They tell us where they’ve been, how they did things at their library, what their other library looked like. They share and we share what we’ve learned on our journey. They bring a new, objective eye to what we’re doing and we are thankful.
Suddenly an old song comes to mind that I used to plug away at on the piano, “Give me some men who are stout-hearted men, who will fight for the right (library?) they adore…….”, and I smile and chuckle.
Welcome aboard Matthew and Felix. Welcome!
